Conversations That Save Lives
BarbershopChats10 CIC creates safe, respectful and non-judgemental spaces where men can speak openly about mental health, emotional wellbeing, loneliness and suicide awareness.
The Fifth Chair Project is the flagship initiative of BarbershopChats10 CIC. The fifth chair symbolises the unspoken struggles that frequently remain hidden behind silence, shame, fear and social expectation. Through honest discussion, education and community engagement, the project seeks to normalise difficult conversations and promote emotional wellbeing amongst men and wider communities.
Between 2020 and 2025, BarbershopChats10 CIC delivered seminars, awareness sessions and community discussions across more than 20 organisations, conferences and public-facing settings. Our work is practical, accessible and community-focused, with a clear commitment to strengthening relationships, encouraging openness and contributing towards healthier, more connected communities.
What BarbershopChats10 CIC delivers
BarbershopChats10 CIC fosters a safe, respectful and non-judgemental environment where men can speak openly about the issues affecting their lives without fear of shame, embarrassment or stigma. The organisation is built upon the belief that earlier conversation and meaningful connection can reduce isolation and help individuals recognise that many of their struggles are shared by others.
Our sessions cover:
Understanding mental health and emotional wellbeing
Suicide awareness, prevention and early intervention
The impact of loneliness, isolation and social disconnection amongst men
Friendship, peer support and the importance of healthy relationships
The battle for the mind: understanding negative thinking patterns and emotional struggle
Awareness of addiction and compulsive behaviours and their impact on mental wellbeing
Recognising warning signs relating to mental health crisis and emotional distress
Encouraging earlier intervention and reducing barriers to help-seeking
Faith, purpose, hope and personal restoration within community settings
What People Say
"Richard delivers suicide prevention awareness in a way that is both practical and deeply personal. His sessions helped untrained people better understand the signs to look for in individuals who may be struggling with their mental health or considering taking their own life. What stood out most was his ability to speak to every individual in the room. Richard has a unique way of addressing the thoughts, feelings, fears, and concerns that many people carry silently, which creates an atmosphere where people feel comfortable engaging with such a sensitive subject."
